The Science

Why Sodium-Ion

Sodium-ion battery technology is the next generation of marine energy storage. Safer than lithium. Cheaper than lithium. And perfectly suited for the high-surge, salt-air environment of marine applications.

Non-Flammable

Sodium-ion cells cannot experience thermal runaway. No fire risk. No explosion risk. Insurance-friendly. The only marine-safe chemistry that eliminates fire suppression requirements.

Temperature Tolerant

Operates from -20°C to 60°C without derating. No engine room cooling required. Performs in Florida summer heat and northern winter cold equally.

3,000+ Cycle Life

Six times the cycle life of lead-acid. At daily use, that's 8+ years before capacity degradation. The math is simple: sodium-ion pays for itself in year 3.

High-Surge Capable

Engineered for the brutal inrush current of gyroscopic stabilizer spin-up. Our SALT START™ packs are sized specifically for the 3-5x surge multiplier that stabilizers demand at startup.

Independence Matters

Why OEM-Independent

Dealer networks serve the manufacturer. We serve the vessel owner. That difference changes everything about how your marine energy system is designed, installed, and supported.

Dealer Model

  • Locked to one manufacturer's product line
  • Sales quotas drive recommendations, not your needs
  • Termination risk: lose your service provider overnight
  • Markup on parts and labor to fund dealer overhead
  • OEM controls your marketing, pricing, and territory

Independent Model

  • Best-in-class components from any manufacturer
  • Recommendations based on your vessel, not sales targets
  • Permanent relationship: no one can terminate your service
  • Direct pricing with transparent labor rates
  • We answer to you. Period.

"We built Salty Marine because we watched firsthand how dealer networks prioritize manufacturer revenue over vessel owner outcomes. After 15 years installing these systems, we know what works. Now we work for the boat owner, not the factory."

— Jake Stratmann, Founder

Our Story

Built in the Trenches

In 2010, Jake Stratmann began installing marine stabilization and power systems in Fort Lauderdale. By 2022, Starboard Yacht Group had grown to a $7.68 million annual revenue marine services operation — the authorized Seakeeper dealer for South Florida, with a full-service marine center handling everything from electrical rewires to complete gyroscopic stabilizer installations.

Over 15 years and hundreds of installations, one problem kept appearing: the power systems weren't keeping up with the stabilizers. Gyroscopic stabilizers draw massive surge current on startup. Existing battery systems — whether lead-acid AGM or lithium — were either too heavy, too dangerous in marine environments, or simply undersized for the load. Boat owners were told "just run the generator." That answer wasn't good enough.

When sodium-ion battery technology became commercially viable, we recognized it immediately: non-flammable, temperature-tolerant, high-surge capable, and marine-insurance friendly. This was the chemistry the marine industry had been waiting for.

Salty Marine was born from that insight. We took 15 years of hands-on stabilizer installation experience — knowing exactly where the power bottlenecks live on real vessels — and combined it with next-generation sodium-ion energy storage. The result: SALT START™, the first purpose-built sodium-ion marine battery system designed specifically for stabilizer surge loads.

Today, Salty Marine operates as an independent marine energy company under the Starboard Tech Group umbrella. Our R&D is conducted through Starboard Tech & Research (STAR). We answer to vessel owners, not manufacturers.

"Truth Is The Right Answer — and the right power system makes everything else work."
